Surrender/ Return Policy

     Owner Surrender / Return Policy

Sometimes, individuals find it necessary to surrender their pets due to unexpected life changes or unforeseen circumstances. We understand that this is a difficult decision to make, and we can do our best to help your pet find a new home.

Please note: the surrender process can take 2-4 weeks. We are a limited resource facility. Meaning, we only have so many foster homes available at one time. We also need to be sure that we find a foster home that meets your petís needs.

If your dog is an NEHS dog:

NEHS takes great care to match dogs and cats with just the right family so they can remain in their new homes for life. Sometimes, despite best efforts and intentions, the match isn't ideal, or life circumstances prevent the pet staying in the home.

Adopters are given the option to return their adopted pet for up to 30 days from the date of adoption. After three months, we will still take these pets back however pets must be re-evaluated by a professional trainer. The trainer must be from a list of trainers approved by NEHS. We can provide you with a list of trainersí in your area per request. If the pet is over 7 years old, a medical evaluation may also be necessary. A different cost may be associated with this assessment based upon the trainer you select. The assessment report needs to be emailed to us. Please note: we will only accept an assessment by a trainer approved by NEHS.

Medical Requirements:

All dogs must be current on vaccinations, spay/neutered and must have a heart worm test within 30 days. Records must be provided to NEHS prior to the pet being surrendered.

If you are 100% certain you want to surrender your pet, please complete the owner surrender form and e-mail it to us at: Info@NewEnglandHumaneSociety.com . We will be in touch within 7 days. We will then start the vetting/behavioral process. We will also provide you with a timeline of the surrender. We have the right to accept or deny any dog for surrender. That said, we will do our very best to place your pet in their forever home.

Currently we cannot take owner surrenders that are not NEHS dogs. Please email us and we can provide you a list of references.
